A Somerset Grave-Robber


ABSCONDER
7th March 1829.
"William JONES, a native of Durleigh near Bridgwater, Somersetshire, stands Charged with having entered the Churchyard of the parish of Cannington in the County of Somerset on the night of the 27th February 1829 and taken from thence the dead body of Sophia BRYER, the wife of one Robert BRYER, which had been buried therein that day.  He (W J) was seen early on the following morning with a large hamper on his shoulders coming from the direction of Cannington towards Bridgwater, and on the same morning a large hamper was left at the George Inn, at Bridgwater, to be sent to London, which was accidentally discovered to contain the said body.  The hamper was directed on a card thus:  Mr J JONES, c/o Mr HALL, 41 Duke Street, Little Britain, London.
The said William JONES, who had absconded, is a rather slight built Man, but muscular, about 35 years old, about 5ft 5 or 6ins high, dark Complexion, dark Hair and rather sandy Whiskers:  had on a blue frock Coat, blue Trowsers, half Boots and a pretty good Hat.  Information to be given to Mr John William TREVOR, Town Clerk of Bridgwater, Somersetshire".
