Using Google Translate for Websites

Somerset Genealogy specialises in, er well, Somerset. However any genealogist realises that many of our ancestors may not have originated from Somerset or indeed England at all. Either way, many of us aren't bilingual so may have used Google Translate to transcribe documents.

Here's a very simple way to use Google Translate to translate websites.

Open Google Translate.  https://translate.google.co.uk/

Find the page you want translated.  For this instance I have chosen a website for digitised church books for Prussia.

The original URL (or website address) is http://chort.square7.ch/FB/Kirchenb.html

You can find the URL for a website right at the top of your browser (Firefox or Internet Explorer or other).

Here I have highlighted the URL in blue by putting my cursor in front of the first letter and clicking and dragging whilst holding down the mouse button.

Now, click the right-hand mouse button and from the drop-down menu select 'copy'.

Go to Google Translate and click the left-hand mouse button and paste the URL into the the left-hand box.

Now click on the 'Translate' button above the blue link in the right window - Google Translate will usually detect the language for you.  The website opens now in English.  Simples!

Sometimes the translations leave a lot to be desired but it makes life a whole lot easier than typing or copying each sentence into Google Translate.
