Seeking Information on Yeovil Evacuees

We are seeking information on behalf of Patrick Lee who now resides in Australia. Patrick, along with his brothers were evacuated from Hillcroft Primary School, Caterham, Croydon to Yeovil in Somerset on the 10th July 1944.

Patrick was born 31st January 1937 so he would have been approximately seven and a half years old during the evacuation and thus placed in a primary/junior school.

He was evacuated along with his brother's Terry (born 1933), David (born 1935) and Melvyn (born 1938). David and Terry, being older, went onto farms. Patrick and Melvyn stayed together.

The house in which they were billeted lay on the outskirts of Yeovil and fields could be viewed from the back bedroom.  There was a park with a stream running through it nearby. They family they stayed with may have owned a butchers shop in the High Street.  The Yeovilton Air Base was also close-by.

With help from our local archives we have narrowed down which school's Patrick and his brother may have attended, however they do not have any other records.

The Yeovil Borough Education Committee minutes of meeting held 28 July 1944.
Schools include;
Reckleford Junior School
Pen Mill and Infants School
Huish Junior School
St. Gilda's Convent.

The above schools have been contacted and we await replies from them.

Patrick would like to discover which school he attended in Yeovil and also maybe discover the family that he stayed with purely for his own interest.

If you have any information please contact us and I will pass on the information to Patrick.

Thank you.
