Currently looking for....Leonard Albert Matthews

After exhausting all known avenues to find a war diary for a client and feeling quite disappointed about the whole thing, I've decided to widen the net and ask people who view this blog to help if they can. I don't like to let clients down and we know that the diary exists. Although this case isn't strictly a genealogical one, I feel that the mystery can be solved with the right leads.

Len Matthews served under Commodore Robin Melhuish RNR and wrote a war diary during the arctic convoys during WWII and these were published in several books.

Leonard Albert Matthews (also known as Len Matthews) was born 15 September 1923 in Sedgemoor. He married Peggy (Margaret) and resided in Bridgwater, Somerset. Len joined the Royal Army Service Corps and became a Yeoman SignalMan in the Royal Navy. His army number was D/KX. 90069. (please note the name is incorrect). Len died in 2003 in Bridgwater, Somerset.

Citations from Lens' diary are found in;
'The fighting commondores: the convoy commanders in the Second World' War By Alan Burn

'Arctic Convoys: 1941-1945' By Richard Woodman

Leonard died 5 January 2003 in Provident Place, Bridgwater.

I am trying to locate his widow Peggy Matthews or any living relatives that may know of the whereabouts of the diary.

If anyone has any information regarding Len Matthews please email ursula@somersetgenealogy.uk.com
